Mental Health
WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?
Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
It affects how we think, feel, and act, how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Just like physical health, mental health exists on a spectrum — from wellness to illness — and everyone experiences challenges at times.
Good mental health doesn’t mean being happy all the time, but being able to manage emotions, recover from setbacks, and maintain healthy relationships.
Common Mental Illnesses
Some common mental health conditions include:
- Depression – persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue
- Anxiety disorders – excessive worry, restlessness, panic
- Bipolar disorder – extreme mood swings from highs to lows
- Schizophrenia – disturbances in thinking, perception, and behavior
- Eating disorders – unhealthy focus on food, body weight, or shape
- PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) – emotional distress after trauma
How You Can Help Someone with a Mental Illness
You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference. Here are some ways to help:
💬 1. Listen without judgment
- Let them talk freely about what they’re feeling.
- Avoid interrupting or trying to “fix” things right away.
- Show empathy: “That sounds really hard — I’m here for you.”
🤝 2. Offer practical support
- Help with small tasks if they’re overwhelmed (like errands or meals).
- Encourage healthy habits (sleep, eating, getting outdoors).
📞 3. Encourage professional help
- Suggest seeing a therapist, counselor, or doctor.
- Offer to help them find resources or go with them to appointments if they’re comfortable.
🧠 4. Learn about mental illness
- Understanding what they’re going through reduces stigma and helps you respond better.
💓 5. Be patient and consistent
- Recovery takes time.
- Check in regularly — even simple messages can mean a lot.
🚨 6. Know when it’s an emergency If someone talks about wanting to harm themselves or others, take it seriously:
- Don’t leave them alone.
- Contact emergency services (like 911 in the U.S.) or a crisis hotline.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS?
🧠 Mental Health
Definition: Mental health refers to your emotional, psychological, and social state — how you think, feel, and behave.
It’s about your ability to handle stress, build relationships, and make decisions.
Everyone has mental health, just like everyone has physical health.
Examples of mental health factors:
- Emotional regulation (how you handle stress or anger)
- Self-esteem and confidence
- Ability to focus or think clearly
- Relationships with others
Poor mental health can lead to conditions like depression, anxiety, or burnout — but mental health is not only about illness.
You can have a mental illness and still experience moments of good mental health with the right support.
🌈 Wellness
Definition: Wellness is a broader, more holistic concept. It’s the active process of making choices that lead to a balanced, healthy, and fulfilling life — across all areas, not just mental health.
It includes:
- Physical wellness: exercise, sleep, nutrition
- Emotional wellness: self-awareness, resilience
- Social wellness: healthy relationships and support
- piritual wellness: sense of meaning or purpose
- Intellectual wellness: learning and creativity
- Occupational/financial wellness: satisfaction with work and stability
Wellness is about maintaining balance among these dimensions.
💡 In Short:
- Mental health is a component of wellness.
- Wellness is the bigger picture — it includes mental, physical, emotional, and social well-being.
