It is with sadness I have to inform you of the passing of Thamesford Lion Joe Wallace on Saturday January 6. Lion Joe was our last Charter member, with our club since it was Chartered in 1961. He became a Life member March 6 1990.
Our condolences to the entire Wallace family at this difficult time. I will pass along the funeral arrangements when we receive them from Lion Geoff Wallace.
Lion Joe was an active member until the last couple of years, his contributions to the community will always be remembered!
Joe to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on June 30, 1937, Joe's life was marked by a deep commitment to his family, work, and community, leaving a legacy of love and service that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Joe's journey began alongside his high school sweetheart, Ellen Grace Bent, whom he met in Grade 9. Their love story was one for the ages, culminating in a beautiful marriage on November 5, 1955. Together, they built a life filled with joy, challenges, and triumphs. Joe was a devoted husband and a pillar of strength for Ellen throughout their shared years.
A proud father, Joe raised four wonderful children with Ellen: Geoffrey Wallace (Patti Scott), Gary Wallace (Cindy Clark), Timothy Wallace (Kim McDermott), and Katherine Wallace (div. Lloyd Henderson). He instilled in them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion.
Joe's role as a grandfather and great-grandfather was one he cherished deeply. He was a beloved Grandpa and Great Grandpa to Katie (Taras) Panchyshyn, Weston and Ivan; Jenny (Scott) Cox, Mary and Sarah; Anna (Justin) Dale, Kaylee; Melissa Wallace; Jeremy (Kaci) Wallace, Jack and Tucker; Jessie (Alan) Thirkettle, Colton and Chase; Jayme (Paul) Claessens, Elsie and Theo; William Henderson; and Wyatt Henderson (Jessy). His family brought him immeasurable joy and pride.
Joe's professional life was dedicated to managing the family business, Wallace Bros Lumber, a role he embraced with passion and excellence.
Beyond his business acumen, Joe was deeply involved in the Thamesford community. He served as a member of the Thamesford Firefighters, leading with distinction as Chief for 40 years. His commitment to service was further exemplified by his role as a charter member of the Thamesford Lions. Joe's memories of swimming in the river with his buddies Harry Martin and Wayne Gilbert, making snow at Skee-Hi, and selling SkiDoos are fondly remembered by those who shared in these adventures.
Joe's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He became a skilled wood turner, creating countless bowls. His love for the outdoors was evident in his membership with the Belmont Hunt Camp since the 1950s. Joe's love for fishing knew no bounds, and he could often be found casting a line.
Above all, Joe loved his family dearly. His presence at family gatherings, his laughter, and his wise counsel will be profoundly missed. His legacy is not only in the wood he turned, the business he managed, or the community he served, but in the concern he showed and the lessons he taught.
Friends will be received at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home – Thamesford Chapel, 177 Dundas St. Thamesford, on Wednesday, January 10 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday morning, January 11 at 11am at the funeral home. Interment at St. Johns Anglican Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Thamesford Lions’ Club.
