AKERSTREAM, James (Jim) John Bertil – of Guelph and formerly Winnipeg, passed away with his wife and daughter by his side at St. Mary’s Hospital on October 24, 2023 at the age of 85.

Devoted son of Mary Catherine and Bertil, beloved husband of Lissa, much loved father of Brita and father-in-law of Brian, adored brother of Joyce and uncle to Laura and James, and brother-in-law of Derek. Most recently he became an especially proud new grandfather to Arden Christopher.

Jim was an extremely kind, patient, and humbly intelligent man who possessed an avid interest in military history, art, puzzles, yard work, and sports. He had a gentle way with and deep fondness for animals, always doting faithfully on his pets. Jim could almost certainly be found with a book, newspaper, map, or crossword in hand. As a passionate lifelong-learner, he never stopped pursuing and sharing knowledge on many favourite subjects. His professional career was spent as an educator and spanned nearly forty years. Jim had a very strong sense of community service – being a life member of the Guelph Lions Club, board member and elder at his church, regular blood donor, long-time volunteer in special education, and more recently at John McCrae House. Following a lifetime of worldwide travel and adventures, Jim enjoyed many summers at the family cottage, winter visits to Florida, and recently began exploring Canada’s East Coast.

Friends will be received at Eden Mills Presbyterian Church, County Road 17, Eden Mills, on Saturday, November 4th, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Refreshments to follow in the church hall. Arrangements entrusted to WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 519-822-0051 (www.wallcustance.com)

Memorial Contributions to Canadian Blood Services or the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund would be greatly appreciated.
