Joseph Edward Sweeney, fondly known as Joe, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2023, in Woodstock, Ontario, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 1, 1938, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, he shared a special bond with his birthplace. A devoted family man, Joe is survived by his loving wife Anna, daughter Carolyn, son Peter (Deana), and cherished grandchildren Jake (Jenna Child), Luke, Sam, Nick, and Charlie. Cherished brother of Paul (Joanne) Sweeney. Joe also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. Joe is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Leana (Melanson) Sweeney and his sister Nancy (Frank) Murray. His strong presence will be deeply missed, and the wonderful memories created with his family will be treasured forever. Joe was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending hours on and around the golf course. It was common to find him at Craigowan golf course, building friendships and participating in friendly competitions. He was a true sports enthusiast, with a deep loyalty to his beloved Boston Red Sox. Joe's love for the game was infectious and brought his family together around the TV whenever possible.

Joe spent over 40 years as a member of the Lions Club. Known for his friendly, kind, and loving nature, Joe was a beacon of positivity for all who met him. He had a unique ability to brighten the day of everyone he encountered, and his big heart made him well-respected and admired by those in his community. Throughout his life, Joe’s countless acts of kindness and generosity reflected his unwavering love and commitment to his family and friends.

His time as an educator enriched the lives of many and created beautiful memories that will live on in the hearts of those lucky enough to have been touched by his spirit. As we remember Joe’s incredible life, his family and friends will cherish the moments they shared with him, taking solace in knowing that his love will continue to surround them. The world has lost a true gentleman, but heaven has gained a shining light.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday July 5th, 2023, from 10 am to 11 am at Brock and Visser Funeral Home (845 Devonshire Ave. 519-539-0004). A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday July 5th, 2023, at 1 pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (1420 Devonshire Ave.). If desired, memorial contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society, Sick Kids Hospital or a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated and may be arranged through the Brock and Visser Funeral Home (519-539-0004).
