Neil Wilfred Cockwell, age 87, of Listowel, formerly of Atwood, passed peacefully with family by his side Saturday March 18, 2023 at Listowel Memorial Hospital.

For nearly 66 years was the beloved husband of Bernice (Bell). Dear father of Brian (Debra) Cockwell, Bruce (Janet) Cockwell, and Donna (Rob) Jeske. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Nigel (Jessica), Jillian (Aaron), Alyssa (Evan), Kirstie (Greg), Taylor (Jordan), Josh (Jenna) and his great granddaughters Harper and Landry.

Fondly remembered by brother Murray, and in-laws Leon, Bette, and Shirley. Predeceased by his parents Wilfred & Olive Cockwell, and in-laws Nellie and Gordon Bell. Predeceased by siblings Ruth, Ross, Percy, Mac, and Vivian.

Neil, born and raised in Donegal, began his career at the Bank of Nova Scotia. After he and Bernice married, he moved to Ideal Supply where he opened the Kincardine branch. Neil’s insurance career began in 1974 and led him to start Cockwell Insurance Brokers in Atwood, operating at the original location for 40 years. Neil, deeply committed to his community of Atwood, was a lifetime member of the Atwood Lions Club, original member of the Atwood Fire Department, served on the Donegal Cemetery Board, Chamber of Commerce, and Pine River Boat Club. Neil also operated as a full time spare at the Atwood Men’s Club always subbing in when necessary.

Neil could be found tinkering in his shop, woodworking, repairing/restoring engines, or fishing, relaxing and socializing at his Lake Huron cottage.

Neil’s greatest joy was his family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren along with assorted pets.

A private family service will be held. A public celebration of life will take place on a future date. Memorial donations may be made to the Atwood Lions Club, the Listowel Memorial Hospital or a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be left at www.brennemanfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Brenneman Funeral Home, Atwood.
